The Rain Moth (Abantiades atripalpis) is a large species of moth which emerges after heavy rain. They are found in Melbourne and other parts of southern Australia. Their larvae, or grubs, live underground feeding on wattle roots. Adult moths usually emerge in the autumn months from around April to June and will often appear on windowsills at night in large numbers. Brown casings lodged in the ground are a telltale sign that Rain moths have emerged during the night. They mate and the females scatter thousands of small eggs which wash into crevasses and hatch into grubs which repeat the life cycle.
