Local bird watchers get excited each April/ May when threatened Swift Parrots may be migrating through north-east Melbourne, on their migration from Tasmania to northern Victoria and NSW. The birds rest on their journey in areas where gum trees are flowering or where there is a plentiful supply of the sugary insect, lerps. This year a flock of about 30 Swift Parrots took up residence at a carpark at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus. Sometimes it was hard to tell which numbered more, the Swift Parrots or the bird observers!
